Yet, as membranes filter out the impurities from the water, the membranes themselves become fouled (or clogged), less effective and begin to degrade. Degradation of membranes will result in decreased productivity, increase the pressure drop through the system, increase the potential for further fouling and subsequently reduce product quality. Once the membrane polymer has degraded, performance usually cannot be restored.
